Top 5 Podcasting Mistakes to Avoid (So You Can Grow Faster!)
Podcasting is an incredible way to build authority, connect with your audience, and grow your brand—but it’s easy to fall into common traps that slow your progress.
Over the years, my clients and I have made plenty of mistakes, and I’m here to help you skip them and fast-track your success!
Podcasting Mistake #1: Trying to Reach Everyone
If you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one.
Instead of casting a wide net, get crystal clear on your audience. Define your dream listener and tailor your content to speak directly to them.
The more specific you are, the stronger your connection will be.
Podcasting Mistake #2: Overcomplicating the Tech
Many aspiring podcasters get stuck in tech overwhelm before they even start.
Keep it simple! All you need is:
A quality microphone (like this one)
A recording platform (Audacity, Zoom, Descript or Riverside.fm)
A podcast host (Buzzsprout is the one I use - here’s a referral link for a $20 credit)
You can always upgrade later, but don’t let perfection hold you back from launching.
Podcasting Mistake #3: Too Many Guest Episodes
Guest episodes can be great for exposure, but if you want to be seen as an authority, prioritize solo episodes.
Aim for two-thirds solo content and one-third guest episodes.
This balance ensures that your expertise is front and center while still bringing in fresh perspectives.
Podcasting Mistake #4: Publishing and Ghosting
Hitting “publish” is just the beginning! If you don’t actively promote your episodes, they won’t get heard. Be sure to:
Share on social media (Instagram, Threads, Facebook groups)
Email your list with episode highlights and a link to listen
Drop your episode in relevant conversations and communities
Bonus: Add your episodes to your website. Take it a step further and create a blog post from your episode to double up on SEO and long form content!
Consistency in promotion is just as important as consistency in publishing!
Podcasting Mistake #5: Skipping a Call to Action (CTA)
Your listeners need guidance on what to do next! At the end of every episode, include a clear and compelling CTA:
Subscribe to the podcast
Join your email list
Grab a free resource
A strong CTA keeps your audience engaged and helps convert listeners into loyal fans and customers.
Podcasting Bonus Tip: Stay Passionate About Your Podcast Topics
Don’t record episodes just because you feel like you “should.”
Choose topics that excite you!
Your enthusiasm will be contagious and keep your audience coming back for more.
Make Your Podcast Work for You
Avoid these mistakes, and you’ll be well on your way to a podcast that builds your brand, grows your audience, and delivers real value.
